I think I’m going to make a master list of all the things I
blatantly made fun of was skeptical to try that I now love. Friends, it’s a long list. As one who approaches trends with trepidation and perhaps even a misguided superiority, I am usually a pretty harsh critic of any type of bandwagon. But I’ve learned that sometimes bandwagons are jumped on for a reason. Because sometimes they are awesome.
So let’s see: LuLaRoe (someday I will tell you all about my absolute undying love of LuLa), going gluten free (sigh), LipSense, Young Living Essential Oils, and yes, Stitch Fix. I mean, what’s next for me?? Probably one of those meal delivery services and maybe that Orange Theory Fitness Place people love so much. Never say never, right?
But let’s talk about Stitch Fix. I was prepared to not like it, staying true to my skeptical nature. But my first Fix was perfection. I would have purchased most of it if I could, but the prices on some items were higher than I liked so I kept the best jeans ever and this kick-ass flannel shirt. I was hooked . . .
But wait, I’m getting ahead of myself. What is Stitch Fix and how does it work? From their website:
“Stitch Fix is an online styling service that delivers a truly personalized shopping experience, just for you. Fill out your Style Profile and a personal stylist will hand pick pieces to fit your tastes, needs and budget—and mail them directly to your door. Each box contains five items of clothing, shoes and accessories for you to try on at home. Keep what you love, send the rest back in a prepaid USPS envelope. Shipping and returns are free—even for exchanges!”
Fun, right? So here are the top reasons why I love Stitch Fix, especially for busy moms!
1. No shopping!
Running out with the kids to try on clothes sound like the 10th level of hell to you? You’re not alone. Shopping while single, childless, and I don’t know, 25, was fun and relaxing. Shopping now as a busy working mom often fills me with a blend of dread, guilt, and pressure. How long until my children melt down? How many more minutes do I have in this Kohl’s dressing room before I have to race to check out so I don’t miss the school bus? Or, When am I even going to find the time to shop for a dress for my holiday party this year? Not having to go shopping is one of the most convenient aspects of Stitch Fix for sure.
2. Having a “personal stylist” is pretty freaking cool
I love filling out and updating my style profile. This is one of the steps that is essential to Stitch Fix success: be meticulous with your profile. Really think about your preferences, what you’re looking for with your choices, and be painfully honest about your measurements, sizes, and comfort with certain styles. Creating a Pinterest board for your stylist to follow can also be helpful. The more accurately you can pinpoint your style preferences, the more likely you are to love your fix. I had one fix that was just meh. So I went in and updated my style profile and added a very specific note to my stylist about what I was looking for. As for the next one? She knocked it out of the park. It’s actually super fun to go in and figure out what your style type is and which clothes you like best. You can specify if you want work clothes, elegant clothes, comfy clothes, or in my case, as CHEAP as possible clothes.
3. The surprise factor
So I love listening to my favorite playlists in the car, but sometimes I like to go old school and listen to the radio. Because every so often they play a song I didn’t even know I was dying to hear. Does that make sense? There’s nothing better than hearing one of your old favorite songs play that you had totally forgotten about, or listening to a brand new song from a band you had no idea you loved. It’s kind of the same with fashion: sometimes having someone else pick out your clothes is a refreshing change. Control is good, but I also love getting an outfit from Stitch Fix that I would never have thought to pick for myself. It’s the coolest surprise ever. And as moms, how often do we get to be surprised by something that isn’t a “Code Brown Naptime” or a school performance that’s happening freaking tomorrow, or a diaper that went through the wash?
4. Seriously unique clothes
I kind of love that I won’t run into a dozen other moms from school wearing the same Costco skirt that I am (true story), you know? The clothes at Stitch Fix are unlike any others I see during my frantic mall runs . . . they are unique, high quality, and super cute! I don’t feel like I have a very solid grasp on fashion, if we are being honest, and if it were up to me I would likely wear jeans with a tank top and cardigan every day of the week. When I’m not wearing leggings, obvs. It’s hard for me to look at clothes on the rack and tell if they would look amazing or hideous on me. It’s so helpful to have an actual professional choosing cute and comfortable clothes for me!
5. My Stitch Fix Clothes Make Me Feel Good About Myself
This is an important one. As moms, we don’t often get the opportunity to focus on our appearances or take the time to choose clothes that make us feel like our best selves. And my Stitch Fix clothes make me feel confident, stylish, and even, dare I say, sometimes even a little bit hot. My last pair of jeans from them are freaking fantastic and make me feel great. I specify in my stylist note that my job consists of sitting on the floor and working with little kids, so I need outfits that are comfortable and functional. And yet I still feel super cute and good about myself whenever I wear my Stitch Fix clothes. Expectant moms– they have maternity clothes, too!
It’s like a treat to myself, opening a box of beautiful clothes chosen just for me. Moms don’t always get the chance to feel special and pampered, and Stitch Fix makes it possible. My next Fix arrives next week, hooray! And another great thing about Stitch Fix is that you can order once a month, once a year, or whatever works for you. Win!
Have I convinced you to give it a try yet? I’m not really a clothing-obsessed person, but in the past year as I approach 40 and have started focusing more on my health, finding clothes that fit, flatter, and complement my own personal style has become more of a priority. And now, after having lost over 20 pounds, I am even more interested in updating my wardrobe!
